Topic Proposal: I plan on writing about the memoir genre. More specifically, I am going to write about memoirs involving child abuse, neglect, or any other childhood that may be considered tough to endure. I am first going to address the issue of whether or not memoirs are completely factual, or if they are exaggerated. This means that the paper will answer the question of is it even important for an author to be completely factual the entire time. Some believe that memoirs may not be totally factual because it is told from someone's point of view, and therefore it is biased. However, maybe the purpose of a memoir isn't to just write down the facts that you've lived through and the story has a greater purpose. Each author has their own purpose and reasons to why the author chose to write about their own life. By collecting interviews of the authors it will give an idea of how the author's lives have changed since writing a memoir and their personal reasons for writing down their own stories for the world to read. The books that they write sometimes have a follow-up at the end of the book, or the memoirs may be in a series. Within my paper I plan on proving that no matter why the author wrote the memoir, writing can be therapeutic. It can also help others who are going or have gone through similar problems. I am going to write about the effect that well-known memoirs have had on society. By proving that there are websites for the sole purpose of therapeutic writing and by getting answers from real authors of memoirs I plan on proving that writing helps the mind go through the healing process.
Thesis: There are many benefits to writing memoirs about a bad past time and this kind of writing is therapeutic to the author of the memoir.
